Located at near 2000 feet elevation in the high Sonoran Desert of far northern Phoenix and Maricopa County, in what is commonly referred to as Cave Creek, Dove Valley Ranch is technically within the City of Phoenix town limits and therefore enjoys all city services (water, sewer, trash, fire and police, etc.) .
The area , situated at the foothills of the mountains of the expansive Cave Creek recreation area and the Tonto National Forest, has stunning mountain views in nearly all directions and has a decidedly more rural feel than most parts of the city. Higher elevation results in cooler temperatures, and comparatively sparse population results in quiet, peaceful nights and very little of the traffic jams and hustle and bustle of the inner city.
The neighborhoods were specifically designed to blend in with the beauty and the natural desert environment. Special attention was paid to maximize open space within the community, with most homes having nearly three hundred feet between them and their closest neighbors to the rear. ‘View fencing’ takes full advantage of the varied cacti, wildlife and abundant vegetation that occupy the land.
Streetlights are present only on street corners, and only indirect outside lighting is allowed on homes to ensure a star-studded view of the brilliant desert night sky.
An award-winning Robert Trent Jones II public golf course meanders through the scenic and relaxed community, providing residents and visitors with stellar views and championship caliber play.

Dove Valley Ranch Golf Club opened in 1998 to rave reviews and accolades as Arizona’s Best New Public Golf Course, and it continues to grow even more inviting as the challenging and graceful layout by Robert Trent Jones Jr. matures. Just as ancient people who once lived here conjured beauty and function from the harsh surroundings, so did the Jones Jr. team – creating a golf course that respects the natural surrounding while supporting a more comfortable lifestyle. The upscale, daily fee facility opened as the key amenity in the new 850-acre Dove Valley Ranch master planned golf community in North Phoenix, off Cave Creek Road and Rancho Paloma Dr.
Following the lead of the ancient Hohokam people from a millennium ago, who opted for a peaceful existence below Black Mountain, Dove Valley Ranch Golf Club allows golfers a comparable opportunity to get away from it all – if only for a day.
Charged with preserving the prehistoric significance of the property and maintaining the natural character of the desert, the Jones Jr. team created the Dove Valley course amid specific landscape features and historic attributes incorporating them into the overall layout without dramatically altering the environment or the natural flow of the fairways.
Dove Valley Ranch Golf Club is essentially a desert style golf course with hints of tradition, such as ample fairways and subtly contoured greens with openings in front, featuring a low, rolling mix of holes of varying difficulty. The layout is very playable, but also strategic enough to test the course-management skills of every player. According to Jones, the key was to not “overcook” the gentle nature of this golf course, which makes Dove Valley a kinder, gentler creation from a designer usually known for his more heroic strategies.
The front nine opens as an easy warm-up for what is to come and bears down quickly on the 2nd hole, Fatal Attraction. Framed by water down the right, this risk/reward dogleg is quintessential of Jones Jr. designs, which tests the player’s willingness to take a chance. The remainder of the front nine meanders through rejuvenated open desert and closes with a par 4 along a large lake in play on Number 9, Watering Hole.
The back nine tightens as it plays into the dense desert vegetation along Willow Wash, the dominant natural land feature on the golf course. The desert test begins on Number 11, The Peak, a lengthy hole with dense desert both right and left of the tight driving area and a long thin green protected in front and to the right by tributaries to Willow Wash. Ironwood and acacia trees line narrow fairways throughout the Wash holes putting a premium on shots that find fairways. Aptly named Bird Bath, the 18th challenges with a final stretch of water that runs the length of the hole along the right side. The green-side bunkers, water and northerly view of the mountains etches memories of this magnificent course you will want to play again and again.
Dove Valley Ranch offers a yearly membership program. The membership is available for $3250 per calendar year per individual. Yearly members will have access to the golf course for a $20 trail fee for the entire year. Only the individual’s name on the membership receives this fee. Guest fees for yearly members are included in the table below. Tee times can be made by the member 10 days in advance. The membership also includes 20% discounts on golf shop merchandise not already discounted, AHN Handicap service, 20% off at the clubhouse restaurant, and full use of the practice facility.
According to club designer Robert Trent Jones Jr., “This isn’t just another golf course”. Few courses in the Phoenix Scottsdale area can boast the attributes and amenities of Dove Valley Ranch Golf Club. It is unsurpassed in natural beauty and play. At every turn, brilliant greens contrast with the desert’s muted palette of Ocotillo, Saguaro, Ironwood, Palo Verde and Cholla and there is never a dull fairway or green setting. Jones has ingeniously blended some tricky design elements into a pleasing order of holes with varying degrees of difficulty. The result is a design that puts a premium on variety and shot strategy. Unlike many of the Arizona’s “target” golf courses, Dove Valley is more user friendly. It has well manicured transition areas that allow for ease of recovery without penalty. You’ll find sand bunkers on every single hole, and the finishing hole is a nice par 4 with water on the right and plenty of traps around the green. The course threads through the open desert below Black Mountain and will provide everyone with a challenging yet refreshing round of golf.
